My Students
We are a free, public, charter school that serves almost 300 children who live in a district that is classified as low income, with all children receiving free breakfast and lunch. The background of students in this school is widely varied. We are consistently working to improve educational opportunities and variety of experiences each year! Our smaller environment helps many students to thrive. My classroom has 26 fabulous and active fourth graders!
My Project
Our yearly curriculum provides for opportunities to learn and compare aquaponics to general soil growth. The curriculum provides for planting in still water with consistent bleaching which does not provide for a good growth environment. By growing plants on our fish tank and talking about their growth all year, we can then adequately compare that growth to the soil growth during our science unit!
Our classroom will be enhanced and student understanding of aquaponic capabilities will be improved with these materials.
Even students leaning from home can compare the growth through pictures, discussions, and videos of the plants!
