My students need a science center where they can observe live insects and worms.

My Students
Have you ever watched a praying mantis emerge as a nymph and grow into an adult? Have you ever been amazed at the sight of a butterfly emerging from a chrysalis? My young students have not, and I know their appreciation for nature will benefit from witnessing such miracles.
My kindergarten students live in a small town in a country setting.
The school they attend has less than 200 students total and qualifies for Title I services. In general, my students are energetic, curious, and enthusiastic about learning. The reason I love to teach these students is because they are at an age where they treat every day as a day where they can learn something new, and they look to me to provide them with the excitement for the day!
My Project
A learning standard for Kindergarten students in Virginia is to investigate and understand life processes of animals, including specifically butterflies and frogs. In the past, I have been able to collect tadpoles and caterpillars in the spring for students to observe. The wonder in the children's faces when they see the transformations occur is priceless, and the students remember the order of the life cycle because they actually experienced the process (as opposed to being told about it or having to read it in a book).
My goal is to have a science center that is active throughout the year, not just in the spring. Having an ant farm and a worm colony would allow for this to occur. I would also like for students to be able to observe an insect that they may not routinely see, such as a praying mantis. In this science center, students will learn about how these insects and worms grow, work, and sustain life.
I feel that having a "living" science center in the classroom will encourage students to have a respect for nature.
I also hope that my energetic kindergarten students will learn the value in taking a few still moments each day to observe how the earth's tiniest creatures live. I imagine that this center will also inspire students to have an interest in other insects and animals, which will encourage further research and observation.
