Applying Science Concepts to Virtual PE

Help me give my students get an iPad Pro to create more dynamic online classes that work for students with a different range of fitness levels.

My Students

My students come from a wide variety of backgrounds, and 35% of the school population are economically disadvantaged. With the current situation our country is facing with the pandemic, many of my students have been affected in some way. Many of my students' parents have been laid off from work and are now facing serious issues in the home.

As wonderful as it is to be with my students face to face during the school day and having them engage in physical activity during PE, this is a completely different situation.

Trying to find creative ways to have my students continue to be active physically from a distance is extremely frustrating. I am looking for ways to continue to be the inspiration in their lives to have them continue with good health and fitness.

My Project

The iPad is a great tool for a number of reasons. It allows me to go paperless and board-less now that we are implementing distance learning. Online learning is one thing that is new and that has been forced upon us by the current health situation.

We recognize that, during this closure, teachers and students have different abilities to engage in distance learning.

However, with this technology, learning can still be fun and doable. Taking notes or annotating slides when sharing screens is much better than using a whiteboard that won't fit the screen on my computer.

The use of the iPad will be invaluable for communicating information to my students, especially the cross-curricular concepts that are a part of STEM. Science and math will both be used to assess body movements as students will learn the science behind how the body moves in space. Having the iPad handy will give me, as an instructor, the power to communicate physical science and physics concepts during virtual/distance learning and when school is back to normal and will allow students to apply their knowledge with the use of the iPad when on the go in the gym, on the football field, or on the track.

The classroom environment of a physical educator changes dramatically, and allowing students the opportunity for cross-curricular science concepts that apply to physical education on the go is the best way for students to learn across multiple subject areas.

In addition, through iPad Pro apps and with the explosion in mobile technology, physical educators have a wealth of tools. For example, MapMyFitness and MyFitnessPal allow for movement tracking as well as nutritional help. Some apps also assist with improving athletic activities such as basketball, football, and many others.
