My students come from a wide variety of backgrounds, and 35% of the school population are economically disadvantaged. With the current situation our country is facing with the pandemic, many of my students have been affected in some way. Many of my students' parents have been laid off from work and are now facing serious issues in the home.
As wonderful as it is to be with my students face to face during the school day and having them engage in physical activity during PE, this is a completely different situation, trying to find creative ways to have my students continue to be active physically from a distance is extremely frustrating.
I am looking for ways to continue to be the inspiration in their lives to have them continue with good health and fitness.
My Project
Closing schools for such a long time is a tremendous challenge. This is a situation that none of us have experienced before and this has been a difficult time for everyone as we have had to adjust to many aspects in learning. Despite the uncertainty, it is important that I keep working to support students' need to continue learning.
Physical Education is not only learning how to shoot a basketball accurately or passing a soccer ball accurately, but also learning the process in which the body performs these tasks and the muscles/ligaments/bones/joints that are involved with the particular movement.
Students can also analyze videos of professional athletes and use a screen-capture feature to observe the angles and shapes of their bodies. Being able to include science concepts within my lessons will create an overlap in information between the core science classes such as biology/anatomy and the physical education curriculum, which directly relates to an increase of material being retained. This type of learning will allow my students to practice proper techniques in various athletic skills.
