Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students eat their breakfast at school each morning before they come to my class. Fuel in their bodies makes them ready to learn and start the day. The school serves free breakfast for 85% of the students, and they get to the school early to eat the breakfast that they don’t get at home.

These students are 11 and 12-year-old boys and girls, growing, trying, experiencing, experimenting, challenging, and ultimately becoming educated in my classroom.

My classes are all year so I can work with these students in depth with technology, get to know their strengths and weaknesses, and see their creativity develop as their experience with art increases.

They are in uniform, and some kids have uniforms that fit and are clean and others have uniforms that are too big, too small, and don't really look clean. The majority of kids are happy and energetic and ready to learn. Some students have trouble staying awake and staying focused.

My Project

My students need a Lego book about constructions, Lego pieces with gears, bricks, ramps, axels; to create moving machines on our Lego wall & a storage container for the pieces. The students want to start creating movement on the Lego wall and we need new pieces to try this and books with examples. I let students drive what directions they will build on the art class Lego wall and they choose what to build. This is teaching for artistic behavior TAB project with STEAM. They wrote their names in Lego the first year only and this year they have started making colorful patterns and stories with Lego pieces. A concrete example of how these Lego books and pieces will be used is now these students will be able to make moving Lego constructions with these new pieces and example books. A group of students have started putting pieces together to make other pieces move and this gave me the idea of requesting these items: Lego ramps, gears, axles, colorful rod and assorted Lego pieces and a storage cabinet so pieces are kept in one place and don't get lost. They are already using Lego to engineer movement and make movable Lego constructions with regular Lego pieces but are limited. The Lego wall in the art room has developed into a place for thinking, imagining, predicting, developing how one Lego piece will interact with another and what reaction they can predict and plan for.

This Donors Choose project will give the art room Lego pieces and example books for students to explore creatively, applied science with engineering designs and concepts using Lego to making moving constructions on the Lego wall.

I’m impressed that they thought of this on their own. Lego are steam in the art room.
