This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
During this coronavirus pandemic, many things changed abruptly for my 7th-grade students. I teach three sections of math at a Title One Middle School located in a resource-poor neighborhood of the Bronx, NY. My students, each with a big heart filled with curiosity and an enthusiastic drive to learn more, come from lower-income housing, the projects, or shelters. Many have come into the classroom carrying the baggage of trauma that most people have not had to ever deal with in an entire lifetime. Like most children, my students love having hands-on experiences and I want ALL of my students to be able to have access to their own personal learning needs!
Inspiring my students to learn with a hands-on engaging environment is the mission in our new virtual classroom.
Despite all that my students have to deal with at home along with adjusting to this new norm, they all have been trying their best to join the online sessions every day ready to learn. With everything going on in the world, I want to be able to provide my students with stability along with being as consistent as I can during this time.
My Project
My students love learning through the use of technology in the classroom. We are in need of an Apple pencil to accompany our classroom iPad. The Apple Pencil works as a stylus on the iPad screen and the precision of this tool allows the teacher/students to clearly show their thinking by creating digital diagrams and models. The clear writing and drawing of an Apple Pencil will help visual learners make sense of new mathematical concepts.
The pencil will allow students to become the teachers by empowering them to explain their thinking to others in the class while engaging in mathematical practices.
Having access to an Apple pencil will provide my students with countless opportunities to learn and explore the world through technology, as they develop important research skills in preparation for their future careers.
