Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

New York City Public School 56 Queens is a Title I school with a student body of approximately 70% eligible for free lunch. Our school had the good fortune to be rewired for wireless Internet access and the school has chosen the PC platform. With the latest technology, Apple has taken a lead in creating easy video editing and also including videoconferencing within its new Apple computers. We have broadband access in our school but our fifth grade students would benefit greatly from the ease of creating video CDs and videoconferencing with our California e-pals who are using the Apple iSight format. According to both Apple and PC experts we have consulted, the PC and Apple formats are not compatible so in order to meet with our California classmates, we would need to have an Apple computer. Connecting with them would be through the Internet and we would be able to collaborate on space science projects together prior to videoconferencing with NASA's Digital Learning Network. Part of that collaboration would be to take video clips of our work in progress so that we can share it online. The video editing features of Apple are accessible to elementary school students in the form of iMovie (called iLife which comes bundled on Apple machines). We have a video camera but no way to really edit the video we take. Taking video, editing it, and then videoconferencing with California via the web in preparation for our NASA videoconferences would become a reality if students had access to an Apple computer. We're learning that it is essential these days to be able to function with both platforms (PC and Apple). This would also enhance students' technology skills as they develop multimedia projects in what is now a global environment. To that end, we hope Donors Choose will agree and thank you for your consideration of this proposal.
