My students need cyclone tubes, chenille sticks, glue, borax, paint, and other simple materials to perform science experiments with the kindergartners.
Criss cross apple sauce! MuHS students want to share their zeal for science with local kindergartners through a series of exciting science experiments.
Our WET club includes high school students of all ability levels; any student is welcome to join--the only requirement is a willingness to work.
The WET club includes students from honors classes as well as students with special needs. The School is a large public school in West Virginia, not a wealthy school, but one that holds fast to tradition. Our students have a tradition of service to the community.
My Project
The experiments are simple but they make up a series of engaging experiments for the kindergartners. These simple materials, such as cabbage powder will tint vinegar and baking soda solutions so that when they combined, they make huge purple volcanoes. The glue and borax make flubber; the chenille sticks are used to string the UV beads. Everyone wins! Our high school students get the opportunity to experience service-learning at its best: selecting and planning the experiments, scheduling the outreach, setting up, executing, and cleaning up after. The high school students also exercise compassion when they work side by side with some of their classmates who have special needs, for whom Apple-ka-dabra is a big deal. The kindergartners get excited about science while their teachers take home more fun ideas for their classrooms.
The biggest impact is on the high school students seeing the little ones so excited!
The students with special needs seldom get to be the leaders--here is one chance for them to soar. The other WET club members also learn to see their peers differently through a more compassionate lens. This program does more than just excite everyone about science, it teaches all the students about compassion.
