it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are from a title one school in East Los Angeles. We are in our third year of APES and excited to get our hands in the soil, feet in the water, and noses in fresh air. They are smart, motivated, have big hearts, and love the natural world. It is necessary to bring lab activities and enhance the curriculum by bringing them out of the class room and into nature. Like the Lorax says, "Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better."
My Project
We are starting a community garden on our campus with public compost bins. The APES class will learn how to start and maintain the garden. We hope to grow organic vegetables and use the garden for soil analysis. The live materials like duckweed will be used to study population growth. We will be monitoring their population growth and carrying capacity in their growth chambers.
We will be learning about physiology of a variety of organisms and how environmental pollutants affect their health.
We will be using Daphnia for water pollution and toxicity analysis. We will be monitoring particulate matter and analyzing its effects on our health by going on walks around the urban neighborhood and contrasting pollution levels to natural areas as we go on hikes. We will be using the fitbit, blood pressure monitors, and lung capacitors to do so. We have been doing water pollution studies in our community for the past two years, visiting the LA river, the neighborhood ponds. The refills and new sensors will help us continue this project for years to come.
