Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are some of the smartest thinkers out there. I teach 6th, 7th, and 8th grade advanced reading which is an elective that my students have chosen to be in. My readers range in level and interest and abilities and socioeconomic status and ELL status, but one thing they have in common is that they all wanted to spend more time reading books, talking about books and issues, and growing as writers.
As students who have chosen to take an advanced reading class, I allow them to be part of curriculum choices which sometimes means that we have to figure out how to make some things work.
My Project
After reading "Hurt Go Happy" by Ginny Rorby last year and visiting the Center for Great Apes, my students fell in love with apes. "Hurt Go Happy" centers around a chimpanzee, but my students now want to read a story about an orangutan.
After much deliberation, my students chose "RESCUED" by Eliot Schrefer as the book they would like to read together as the orangutan in the story is much like the ones we met at the Center for Great Apes last year.
Like I did with "Hurt Go Happy", our reading of "RESCUED" will focus on not only comprehending the text, but also analyzing the text for themes, researching topics found in the text, and hopefully attending another field trip to the Center for Great Apes.
I truly want to continue this journey with my students and continue becoming more thorough and analytical readers as well as to build advocates for the protection of these amazing creatures in our world.
