My Students

I teach at a Title I school on the Upper Westside of Manhattan. My students come from economically marginalized communities and many have weak educational backgrounds. All of my students come to school eager to learn something new every day even if the teenager in them cannot demonstrate the emotion. My students have many personal challenges that make school and the requirements of school particularly daunting. That said, all of my students are held to the highest of expectations, both intellectual and professional.

My students are inquisitive and curious about other cultures.

Many of my students live very insular lives even though they live in NYC. While my students are exposed to other peoples and cultures, that contact is superficial. In my Social Studies classroom, units are anchored in geography, driven by primary sources and analyzed through complex secondary sources. Social Studies is the perfect vehicle to teach history, inculcate professionalism and cultural capital to society's most marginalized students.

My Project

AP World History will be the most difficult class that students take during their high school career. To that end, students need all of the support that they can get. The College Board recently revamped the exam so students must be comfortable with the new format. I am requesting a class set of AP World History preparatory books to guide and support my students throughout the year. The books 1) fully explain the new structure of the test; 2) provide a condensed synopsis of the most important content, and 3) provide much-needed practice exams.

The scope of content in AP World History is daunting.

Teachers jokingly call it, "Plato to NATO." Frequently students can get mired in minutia and feel overwhelmed with the width and breadth of so much history. I have requested index cards, and boxes to organize them so that my students can memorialize the content on a study card while they are learning it. The study cards will be invaluable in April when the test-prep and review of all content begins. I have found that the more students write the more that they remember.

Perhaps the two most important skills that students should learn in AP World History are critical-thinking and writing skills. These two skill-sets are fundamental for success in college and life. A good education arms Title I students with the mechanisms for success that they need to navigate professional worlds. The historical primary source book is a wonderful and necessary companion to the textbooks and they essay writing book will support the kids in learning a vitally important skill.

The support of the DonorsChoose community is the reason that our AP World History scores have risen every year. This year, over eight students will receive college-credit because of their success on the exam. Thank you.
