Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school qualifies for 95% free or reduced lunch. In addition to financial challenges, most students have English as their second language. In order to prepare for the AP Literature exam, students must know the strategies and format of this timed, rigorous exam.
One of my students works at Chick-fil-A in South Los Angeles.
When I asked her what she spends her money on, she told me how she sends it to El Salvador, where she is from; to support the students she mentors. Her dream is to become a doctor, go back to El Salvador, and give back to the community she spent her first seven years.
Over winter break, students read The Stranger by Albert Camus. They came back excited to discuss ideas of existentialism. One student commented that it was interesting to be in the head of someone who didn't believe there was anything else outside of this life.
Students also created videos with the text of an AP poem prompt. One student who wants to pursue a degree in Film and Cinema created a powerful video including images of the Titanic with the text of the poem "The Convergence of the Twain."
My Project
A USC student was tutoring individual students and mentioned how in her high school AP class, they quizzed each other with flash cards and did practice tests to prepare for the exam. She scored the highest possible score. Colleges which accept AP scores allow the student to place out of freshman writing, saving tuition and allowing more time and money for coursework toward the major of the intended degree. The Kaplan prep books give practice tests the students can take, familiarizing themselves with the format of the test. The flash cards are a tool students can use to learn the literary devices needs to analyze poetry, prose, and novels. The Express will allow them to review and synthesize what they have learned in class.
"I write entirely to find out what I'm thinking, what I'm looking at, what I see and what it means.
What I want and what I fear." -Joan Didion. Literature, writing, and critical thinking skills are life skills. Higher education demands proficient writers. Students need to see the competition they are up against so they can rise to the expectation.
