A.P. Chemistry Students Can Read Too!

My students need 8 copies each of "Uncle Tungsten: Memories of a Chemical Boyhood" and "Radioactive Boyscout" to enrich their learning beyond what is required for the A.P. Chemistry exam.

My Students

When I read both of these books I felt like my students would be able to relate to the people in them and might actually read the book from cover to cover!

My advanced placement classes tend to be small (less than 20) and they are generally very motivated.

These students attend a small, rural city school in NY with a very high percentage of low income families. Consequently many resources are spent elsewhere and not on our higher level students. These students need the resources also and having some extra books could spur further interest in the subject.

My Project

Reading Uncle Tungsten reminded me of my own childhood because I was always very curious about science. I think students would find the the author's story interesting and they may relate to his chemical curiosities. The Radioactive Boy Scout is about a child their age who took his interest in nuclear science a little too far. They would find the book, which is based on a true story, riveting as they follow this boy through this time in his life! My students will learn that often, curiosity and inquiry leads people to pursue their interests (sometimes with different outcomes!)

My students don't generally read much for pleasure, which I am also guilty of.

A book that they would find interesting and can relate to might accomplish my goal of having them read outside of their textbooks. Please help expand my students' experience with chemistry to something beyond a textbook!
