This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our art department is growing! We had to hire three additional art teachers in the last two years because of growth, not turnover. Our district has been pushing AP development across the board in an effort to keep our high achieving students and families in the district. We have many students whose family members have not been to college, and if they attend, they would be the first. We have a lot of potential, but are often short of cash.
The art department has been preparing for years to offer an AP Art History class. Our school got a grant for AP development, and we got the opportunity to get trained to offer the class, as well as AP Studio Design and Drawing. However next year we are supposed to offer the class, and there is no money left to buy the textbooks. This is a class that CANNOT be taught without the book.
We just need books! Most schools, because of the huge weight of these things, have a classroom set and another set for students to keep at home, but we are just asking for one classroom set.
Art history is the real history of what it means to be human. A knowledge of Art History means developing a real cultural literacy that goes way beyond pop culture trivia references. The study of Art History offers students the chance to connect with others emotionally from the distant past, distant countries, and the distant future. Letting us teach this class helps disadvantaged kids earn a college credit, and also feel a sense of ownership and mastery of our western culture.
