My Students
At our school our students come from all over the world. They each bring their own unique talents and experiences to the classroom and are incredibly excited about learning.
They are full of energy and enthusiasm and are beginning to come together to support one another!
They are passionate and love learning! As we read stories, they are constantly examining the illustrations and making observations that they are eager to share with one another. They are always asking questions, wondering why things work the way they do, or how things come about. They love working together with one another and encouraging each other to become leaders!
My Project
One of the huge gaps that we see at our school is with writing. Many of our students do not enjoy writing, some due to the struggle of coming up with ideas, and others who struggle to get their ideas down on the page. Because of their struggles with writing, many are unmotivated to write, and few see themselves as writers! This is a huge need for us to address in order to empower our students to share their voices with others!
It is my goal that each and every student will begin to see themselves as authors!
By exposing children to books written by both athletes and celebrities that they are familiar with in contexts outside of school I want to show them that anyone can be an author, and hopefully that will inspire within themselves the strength and courage to see themselves as authors, and begin to write, not only for assignments, but also for pleasure!
As teachers we often talk about this idea of "I do, we do, you do." Before we expect students to complete work, we show them what it looks like to do the work, and guide them in the process. Through having books written by local heroes such as Nick Foles and Ryan Howard that it doesn't take being a genius to write...even athletes can do it! They will begin to see that while we know Octavia Spencer as an actress, that she was also capable of writing, and with that begin to see themselves as writers too! Having these books will not only expose our children to different authors, but expose them to many different genres as well, and hopefully inspire them to take their own journey towards sharing their voice!
