My Students
My school is located in the Engelwood community of Chicago, Illinois. I have never worked at a school with such a positive vibe from both students and staff. Although my students regularly face difficult situations, you would never know this from their attitude. Just great kids that live in the neighborhood! We service one of Chicago's largest homeless shelters and we try to add as much pleasure into our students lives as possible. If you visited out school during the day, you would see fun loving, hard working individuals that have a deep love for reading!
My Project
Here at my school, we serve students from the Englewood area. Our student body is made up of Pre-Kindergarten students through 8th grade. This year, we have reopened as a STEM Magnet school! We have such delightful and ambitious children! We are very proud to say that we are a regular neighborhood school but we have high expectations. Many of our students stay in the Olive Branch Mission that is located across the street but it definitely does not break their spirit! Despite obstacles that I couldn't even imagine going through, our students are happy, well rounded individuals with a deep love for reading!
There is nothing that my students need more than books!
We are in desperate need of exciting library books. Our school has an absolutely beautiful library but there is one obvious thing that everyone notices as they walk though and that is how bare our shelves are. It's no secret that Chicago Board of Education is in financial trouble so library books would be a luxury right now. I am asking for grant money to cover the cost of purchasing new library books for our students and staff members. The students truly love their library class and there is no greater reward for me than to hear the excitement when I call a student for book check-out! The students actually will give up their recess period to come to the library to read. The students would love new, hard covered books that allow them explore their imagination!
