Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach English Language Learners in a low-income school where most students qualify for free lunch. Many of the students are refugee students who have spent years trying to be relocated. They find peace in curling up with a book and escaping to a world outside of their reality. Having a comfortable space and snacks to add in their reading adventures will bring joy to my classroom.
These bean bags will give students a place they can relax and unwind.
The sensory wands create an image for them to focus on while also timing their relaxation period. The snacks allow them to refuel while they relax and calm themselves.
All of these things combined create a safe environment to escape the anxieties and stresses of life for a given amount of time before they need to reengage from a better space. This space will allow students to take mental breaks and insure their mental health is addressed. The atmosphere they are in will be available during lunch and after school for those needing a break before extracurricular events. During class students will be allowed five to ten minutes to mentally checkout on the bean bags to take care of mental needs.
