This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A surprising thing happened last year when I taught my students "Antigone." All of my students, from the highest level to the lowest level, truly enjoyed the book. I underestimated the power and longevity of the tragic tale. My students identified with the characters' struggle.

I teach high-needs, urban minority, immigrant and economically disenfranchised high school students.

90% of my students qualify for reduced school lunch. While it is a school in transition, many of our students have had adverse educational experiences or have difficult home situations that can create roadblocks to academic success. Refreshingly, when my students are excited about a topic or book they dive into it. I was very surprised last year at the resounding enthusiasm for "Antigone." My students, frequent champions of the underdog, identified with the moral dilemmas facing Antigone and her sister Ismene.

My Project

This year I need to expand the reading of Antigone so that all classes and be on topic at the same time. To that end I am asking for more copies of "Antigone" so that all classes are reading the same edition. The Greek mythology books will support the research and artistic components of the project that will be put on poster board. After reading the book the students will create a modern, visual version of the story on poster board. This will allow the students to think about the major themes of divine law versus man's laws, loyalty, and the tragedies of war.
