Anti-Gang Reading Club

My project needs 5 copies of 8 book titles, such as Homeboyz and Durango Street, related to the evils of gang violence.

I teach reading and language arts in an inner city Chicago high school. My tenth grade students are faced daily with the challenges of gangs, violence, drugs, and racism. One of the problems my students face on a daily basis is learning to deal with these issues in a constructive way. I've discovered that reading, writing, and discussing these issues can be invaluable tools in helping them "deal" on a daily basis. The sets of books that I've asked for will enable me to conduct "book clubs" in my classroom during self selected reading time. This will give my students an open forum for discussing the issues the characters in the books deal with while connecting the issues in the books to their own lives. These discussions may help diffuse violent situations that my students often are involved in by giving them solutions to issues they run into with gangs, violence, and drugs. Your donation will make a huge difference in the lives of my students. They will not only have the chance to read books they enjoy, but be able to talk about them and find solutions to their daily problems.
