This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students come from a​ large urban area in Connecticut and are an extremely diverse population of students, with families from countries around the globe. Many of our students are English language learners for whom English is a second language, and over half of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Our school is a true melting pot of students with cultural backgrounds from near and far, which makes our school so great!

Our students have backgrounds from approximately 40 different countries around the world... we are a fantastic mixture of cultures and backgrounds!

My Project

Does this project sound familiar? It should! Each year, during the human body unit, the 7th graders learn about the cardiovascular system. In an interactive assignment called "Feel the Beat," they learn what their pulse is, how to find their pulse, and then how the heart pumps the blood around the body! Students listen to their heart rate before exercise, during exercise (not so easy), and after exercise.

Because of COVID safety guidelines and our inability to freely share materials among students in our science class, students' hands-on activities need to be engaging—but also individualized.

Last year, my students were overjoyed when they were told "The stethoscope is yours to keep!" When this project is funded, even more 7th graders will literally be able to "Feel the Beat." They will also use their stethoscope to record their pulse before exercise, during exercise, and after exercise... and get to keep it after! We will then use this data to understand the important job the heart does for the body.
