My students need a 3-D printer to help supplement our STEM curriculum and create an opportunity to advance their scientific creativity using technology.

My Students
Our school is in an urban area of Queens, New York, a melting pot of ethnic diversity. Our students come from many different countries whose families are eager to prosper here in the United States. Many are from the West Indies, South America and India whose families encourage respect and a strong work ethic.
We have done a lot to build up a strong science program in the school, investing in equipment that few schools in the area have.
We have also become a Magnet school with a STEM component. Through these investments in our students, they have shown a greater ability to think, create, problem solve, and succeed. The parents and teachers work hard to foster strong connections so everyone will be involved in the education system. It is a school that really shines a light on what makes our country so great and our students are an example of what the future needs.
My Project
A strong emphasis of our STEM program involves teaching students how to collaborate during engineering projects. Whether it is looking for ways to create simple machines, building an earthquake resistant structure or padding a lunar landing module, a 3-D printer will give our students access to maker resources that might be unavailable to them otherwise. As a science teacher, I am always working to push the imagination of the student in order solve everyday problems. The printer will also create an interdisciplinary connection with the arts to help students who are visual learners. I would like to make this 3-D printer accessible to all students in the school.
