Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are preparing for the Common Core State Standards which requires them to annotate text in order to connect with it. In addition, they are more excited to read something that is relevant to them, like Scholastic's New York Times Magazine!!

My students are 9th and 10th grade students who are in a college prep ELA course.

Most of my students' parents did not attend college so the push for them is to succeed in school. Many of my students are language learners and find little motivation inside the classroom. They are often more inclined to complete an activity when it is relevant to them so I strive to make connections between classroom activities (reading, assignment, content, etc.). My students are somewhat involved in extracurricular activities such as clubs & sports. My students are polite & respectful students who try to demonstrate an earnest effort. My school is 80% Hispanic, 12% Asian, 8% other such as Caucasian, Pacific Islander & African American. Our school is identified as a Title I school, but has shown some improvement in test scores. Our school facilities are very old and are supposed to go through a renovation in the future.

My Project

Lately, my students have been practicing making annotation of text and citing textual evidence by reading a novel (Lord of the Flies & Of Mice & Men). In addition, I find relevant non-fiction articles from the Internet that make connections to the text, for example an article about children being evacuated in 1940s London. The strategies they are practicing are important because my students are going to be required to respond to this in the Common Core State Standards by the Smarter Balanced tests. I am requesting 15 copies of The New York Times Upfront in order to annotate. This will be useful to my students to read an up-dated, color magazine with graphics in which they can annotate and keep the text for themselves. They will learn how to navigate an academic magazine and how to annotate the text.

Donations to this project will improve my classroom because it will give students a fresh perspective of current affairs using the much renowned Scholastic New York Times.

My students read an article each week that is relevant to what we are reading, but it is always black & white so the color will be a motivation to read it! Using these magazines will change my students' lives for the better by showing them the love & appreciation for reading. They will see this when they can keep the magazine.
