This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students in my urban district are denied the chance to CREATE ART! The school day consists of test-centered drills and rote learning for many children all day in the guise of intervention. But my kids have interests and creativity that needs to be harnessed to make their school experience enjoyable!

My students are grades 6-8 in a high-poverty urban public school.

They are all Latino and many are English Learners. The kids are eager to learn and brighten up anytime they can express themselves through drawing. The students are in need of literacy building activities that are high-interest and engaging.

My Project

The library collection that we are requesting will launch students into the process of writing comic books, and Japanese style Manga. Many students have learned a great deal of the English that they know from characters on Pokemon and DragonBall Z television shows. Well, now they are going to continue their learning in a creative way with the use of the books in this project. Students will work together to craft stories where they will apply learning about plot, setting, conflict and resolution, and so on... Due to the increasing popularity of the genre of graphic novels, this project will create a desire to read more in our reluctant readers and inspire them to write more as well.

This project will allow voices to be heard and stories to be told!

So few children are able to use the arts as part of their learning in today's climate and many are turned off to school a a result of not being able to express themselves creatively. This project will get kids writing, reading, and drawing. It will get them thinking and using their imaginations to create.
