Animals Here, Animals There - Are We Alike?

My students need a STEM library, live animal supplies, a mini iPad, and hands-on centers to meet the NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards) and to help them learn more about animals and how they live and grow.

My Students

My school is a melting pot of cultures. We have students from Korea, China, Africa, Mexico, Russia, the Philippines, and Japan; just to name a few. This causes many challenges for me as their teacher. Students everywhere need lots of hands-on activities to get them engaged, excited, and help them learn, even if they don't know the language. My class is no exception. My students are 7 and 8 years old and enjoy learning by doing.

Each year, it is more challenging to get students eager to learn about science.

Many students come to school with a poor or negative experience in these subjects. It's time to change that and get them involved in meaningful activities that help them change and leave my class with "positive attitude".

Students want to learn and by giving them the tools to use in the classroom they will be more confident and achieve greater things. These tools will help bridge the gap between learning and language. Thus, inspiring them to work hard and learn by doing. They are our future and we need to invest in them now, while they are accepting and eager to explore. The "future" is now.

My Project

Excitement starts with nature and we need to bring real animals into the classroom to encourage students to observe the world and everything that lives there. I am asking for a STEM library, live animal supplies, a mini iPad, an aquarium, a an farm, hermit carbs and hands-on centers. By working and seeing a variety of animals on a daily basis, my students will learn how to be responsible, caring, and helpful. Small groups will also use the mini-iPad to document the various stages of growth that the animals go through. These hands-on experiences will allow students a deeper knowledge on how humans and other animals are similar.

“An animal’s eyes have the power to speak a great language.” ~ Martin Buber Students with language barriers can observe and learn a great deal from animals.

I plan to use these observations to improve the students' language skills, write essays, and create/compare life cycles. They will use the science centers to reinforce what they are observing and learning in class. They will use the books to read and learn more about science topics and animals.

Animals have feelings and the students will learn how to care for something other than themselves. They will also work in teams to care for and observe the animals which will improve their social and language skills. When students are able to collaborate and study things that interest them they learn and retain the information faster.
