Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Each day, my students face challenges before they enter the school building, ranging from extreme poverty, single-parent households where the parent works multiple jobs, students with incarcerated parents, and many students who live in shelters.
Several of my students have expressed an interest in nature and animals.
Having non-fiction monthly magazines from National Geographic will benefit them academically and appeal to their interests.
My Project
I am a school social worker in the South Bronx seeking funding for a subscription for National Geographic for Kids to read and discuss.
Reading non-fiction texts is crucial for middle schoolers to improve their academic progress and perform well on state exams.
I have a library with a variety of texts both fiction and non-fiction in my counseling suite that match the interests of my students.
This year I have a large number of students who are interested in animals and nature. Having a subscription to National Geographic for Kids will give them access to age and grade-level appropriate interesting non-fiction information.
