I am a special education teacher in Brooklyn. I will be teaching in a 12:1:1 setting this year and they're 5th graders. I have eleven boys on my roster for the 2005-2006 school year, but it can go to twelve at any moment. I am looking to use animals as incentives for learning and classroom management. I have known my students for a year now and they will now be considered seniors. I had them all as fourth graders. My students have many social-emotional issues. They find it difficult to get along with their peers and other adult figures. They like having jobs and being counted on! My motto to them is to count on me. I strive to encourage leadership and family values in our class. Students in my class tend to have many self-control issues and animals in our classroom can help. I think different animals in the class to care for and observe would be very beneficial. Not only would they be helpful in getting appropriate behavior but also in writing. Students would be able to observe each of the animals and this would create many writing experiences for them. I have many types of students in my class. I have students who bully, fight, tattle, attention seekers, helpless, etc. No matter the types they all love animals! I have seen the student who appears to be mean be very lovable and friendly when it came to a hamster. I am looking to provide my students with another way of coping with issues they may be having. If given the materials needed I know the students will utilize appropriate behavior in school and at home. Students will have something in our class to care for and they will have to think about the choices they make. It would be nice to have an area in our room to provide a home for our class animals.
