Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Don’t Just Play on Your Phone, Program It" - Barack Obama in his address to the nation for CS Ed Week In my Exploring Computer Science classroom, our students are learning to do just that! Rather than passively consuming, our students are learning to program computers.

This class takes place in a 9th-12th grade neighborhood public high school in a large urban Midwestern district.

All of our students are Latino, and all of them come from low income families. Like many schools, we have limited resources, with a very limited number of computers shared with the entire school. Our students have very little background knowledge in the area of computers, and the majority do not have Internet-connected computers at home. Despite these barriers, our students are enthusiastic learners who are excited about gaining computer literacy and basic programming skills.

My Project

Using MIT's Android App Inventor, we will be designing and building Android apps in our Exploring Computer Science class. This allows students with little to no experience to learn the fundamentals of computer programming with a block based language that does not require them to learn syntax (although we will write some Javascript later this year). Unfortunately, while we have some desktops computers available for use in Computer Science, we do not have Android devices available for this purpose. We need Android devices as test platforms; once students write a program, we will transfer them to the tablets in order to test them. We will also have a community forum where members of the community will have an opportunity to test students' Android programs using the tablets.

Do you remember the first time you saw your name in print, or saw a story you wrote in a newspaper or book?

That sense of pride and wonder? Seeing an app that you developed in action gives students a similar sense of accomplishment. I want my students to be able to experience this. Latino students are greatly underrepresented in Computer Science careers, and allowing students to create apps and see them in action can help them understand that they CAN do computer programming. Would you help us?
