This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Giggling, singing and learning are non-stop in my special education, self-contained, kindergarten/first grade classroom in East Harlem.
My class is filled with the 12 best kindergarten and first grade special-needs students around!
Every day, they are faced with the challenges of socializing, fine and gross motor skills, communicating/understanding language and dealing with emotional needs. Even with each of their individual needs and challenges, they love coming to school and learning. Whether progress is made in baby steps or large gains, we are always celebrating the learning and social achievements of the students in class.
Last year was the first year our school opened up a self-contained special education classroom. We are located in a high-poverty neighborhood and did not have enough funding to purchase necessary teaching tools and educational resources. Our classroom was full of unconditional love and an enthusiasm for education but lacked learning essentials.
We had a great year and did our best but now we need your help!
My Project
I am requesting 1 set of student read-alongs for our listening center. By having a listening center filled with books and Cd's with their favorite stories narrated, my students will have the opportunity to improve their reading skills. A listening center is engaging and students take great pleasure in listening and following along as the narrator reads. Hearing a book read on tape/CD helps students see how the words on the page can come alive in a fluid, expressive way. It also helps them to focus on the sounds of words read without interruption and provides a model of fluent reading. Many of the audio books have interesting sound effects, music and multiple narrators that are especially motivating and fun for young children. Vocabulary enhancement, an eagerness to read, and comprehension building are just a few of the other benefits of having a listening center.
My students are kindergarten and first grade students but function below grade level.
By adding audio books to my classroom, you are giving them an additional resource that matches their learning style to help them reach grade level.
