My Project
Like me, my students are products of our city. We have walked the same roads and searched for the same stars in a sometimes starless night. Like me, my students have dreams of places that exist beyond the city limits. However, many of them have not had a chance to experience what really goes on in the world. They don't know that their stories are unique, and yet not so. Growing up, the things that I read helped me to see and seek new things. In my 25 year career, I have always tried to create an appetite for reading within my students. Reading exposes them to new ideas, new places, and new understandings. It exposes them to new and powerful forms of writing and allows them to read and adapt complexities in their writing. In the end, I want them to learn to love to read and to appreciate the benefits of living vicariously through literary characters and finding empathy in the experiences shared in memoirs and life stories.
