My students need more comics and visual narratives in our reading collection. Currently in the classroom library the graphic novel bin is always empty because the books are always in kids hands. We need more!
My students and I have developed a strong bond. I have 20 beautiful children who motivate me to be the best teacher possible. They are readers and writers, and so much more.
My students are so special.
They are so excited to jump right into learning and they are happy to try new things. When presented with an activity, game, or lesson they are jumping up and down to respond and participate. As a teacher it is truly inspiring to facilitate.
My Project
As Hamilton's Lin-Manuel Miranda says, "Love is love is love is love..." I say, "Books are books are books are books..." My students came to me in September and during Reading Workshop would say, "When do we get to read from the graphic novel section if during Reading Workshop we read 'just right' books?" I was shocked by this question. To me, yes, kids need to be reading leveled books, but all books are books and I'm happy to see my kids reading anything. I allow my kids to read graphic novels as their 'just right' book, just as I allow and encourage them to read any book! Let's get comics and graphic novels into the hands of all children as not only a gateway to more, but as a favorite type of literature. TOON books will help us do that.
