My Students
"Ago?" "Ame!" ("Are you ready to learn?" "Yes, we are ready to learn!") My music students are familiar with this call and response which, borrowed from the folkloric traditions of West Africa loosely translates to "Listen!" and "I am listening."
The students at my school are comfortable with multiple languages.
Mandarin, Spanish, Urdu, Russian, Arabic, and Uzbek make up the first languages of most of my students. Some are still learning English, but that doesn't stop them from having fun in the music room.
It is no doubt that their capacity to understand two or more languages attracts them to music. A community of immigrants, the students have a wonderful opportunity to bring a bit of their musical culture to our school, sharing their unique experiences and learning to appreciate others' contributions. Our school is large, around thirteen hundred students, with seventy percent of them qualifying for free lunch. With the current Covid-19 pandemic, our students are participating in hybrid learning, which is a mix of in-person and remote (at-home) learning. It is the goal of our school to accomplish this safely and comprehensively!
My Project
As New York City works to bring elementary school students back 5 days a week safely, I am optimistic that I may be able to start seeing small groups of students in the band room again! In preparation for that glorious day, I'm requesting a new stereo, complete with a CD player, record player, and blue-tooth connectivity for the band room.
There is something exciting about handling a physical CD or record that really connects you to the music in a unique way.
Being able to look at record cover art or read the liner notes in a CD booklet is something I miss with digital music. I don't want my students to miss out on this experience!
I plan to have "listening breaks" where students are allowed to browse through a, hopefully, ever-growing collection of CDs and records. They can choose to either shut their eyes and listen or get up and dance! I also recently put up a project for Jamey Aebersold play-alongs, which are books and CDs with professional rhythm sections for my older students to play-along with. While initially, students will check out these resources for home use, I hope to eventually use them in the classroom and will need a CD player to play them. A stereo will offer boundless opportunities for my students!
