Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students walk into our classroom every day ready to learn, and determined to succeed. However, many of them are unable to bring in their own supplies, so it is up to me to make sure that they have what they need to learn. As their teacher, I want to be able to provide them with all the tools they need to succeed.

I am a second grade teacher in a Title I funded public school on Staten Island.

I teach a 12:1:1 class with 12 students that have challenges ranging from learning disabilities to speech and language impairments and autism. They struggle to keep up with the Common Core Curriculum and need a lot of support. As their teacher, it is my job to do everything possible to make the curriculum accessible to them.

My Project

Books play a vital role in the classroom and in the education of our students. For most of my students, learning to read is a challenge. Many of my second graders are on a Kindergarten reading level and the books that are available to them on this level, can be very babyish or boring. Most of the lower level books in my library are taped up because they have been around so long that they are falling apart.

New books on my students' reading levels will breathe new life into our classroom library, and encourage students to learn how to read.

They will be more excited and enthusiastic about reading, and they will have the books they need to move forward with their education.
