My students need exciting research texts for small group projects on the ancient civilizations of people from Egypt, China, South America, and Europe.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Rhodes's classroom raised $530

My Students
Next year I'll be looping with my students to 5th grade after being with them in 4th. I teach 2 blocks of reading and writing. My classroom is filled with a diverse student population. Ethnicities are numerous and poverty is high.
However, the kids don't see these statistics nor do they care, which is just how I like it.
We come together from all walks of life to LEARN! We enrich each other's lives just by being ourselves. We read about friendship, adventure, love, and even pain. We write about our experiences and emotions. We devour words and spill them out again.
My Project
In the upper elementary grades, students go from ‘learning to read’ to ‘reading to learn.’ Nonfiction can pose challenges, as content vocabulary can be unfamiliar and concepts are often abstract. Engaging, interesting topics can help motivate students to push through these challenges. This year, we will be analyzing nonfiction text structure and enhancing reading comprehension strategies in the genre. We’ll do this through the lens of researching ancient civilizations. Titles in this grant include words like "lost city", "rain player", "gladiator", and "Dirty Rotten Viking."
With topics like these, students will be learning without even realizing it - they’ll think they’re just having fun!
These texts will also expand students’ world view and hopefully spark some interest in visiting the Roman Colosseum or Machu Picchu one day.
This research will be done in a group of 4 format. Working in a research group provides a time in the workday that students look forward to. Communicating and problem solving will be enhanced while students create an oral and visual presentation. Students will be grouped to study 1 of 8 ancient civilizations. This grant supplies 6 different books for each group to excavate. In 3rd grade they studied animals, and in 4th weather. They are going to LOVE this new topic in 5th!
IMPACT: texts will be used with 2 blocks of 29 students and shared with a teammate who also serves 58 students.
