Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a Title I school on the Upper Westside of Manhattan. My students come from economically marginalized communities and many have weak educational backgrounds. All of my students come to school eager to learn something new every day even if the teenager in them cannot demonstrate the emotion. My students have many personal challenges that make school and the requirements of school particularly daunting. That said, all of my students are held to the highest of expectations, both intellectual and professional.

My students are inquisitive and curious about other cultures.

Many of my students live very insular lives even though they live in NYC. While my students are exposed to other peoples and cultures, that contact is superficial. In my Social Studies classroom, units are anchored in geography, driven by primary sources and analyzed through complex secondary sources. Social Studies is the perfect vehicle to teach history, inculcate professionalism and cultural capital to society's most marginalized students.

My Project

Many students come into my classroom and express a vague, "I do not like history, it's boring." As a Social Studies teacher, it is incumbent upon us to transform this narrative into a positive one. We must reveal to our students the wonders of the ancient world and the myriad lessons that can and should be learned from history. The ancient world is fascinating, not only for their engineering and architectural achievements (without steel or microchips) and use of geography but also because the primary source evidence left behind reveals the humanity that flows within all of us.

In this mini-grant students will explore the many facets of ancient civilizations through the eight features of civilization; central government, organized religion, cities, job specializations, social classes, public works, art and architecture, and writing.

Teenagers are visual learners and the Eyewitness books are wonderful for students to explore and demonstrate that human nature does not really change over time, technology changes but not human motivations. Primary source evidence will ground our understanding of the civilizations but the use of DVDs is particularly important for students that are English Language Learners or who struggle with literacy.

Our students will then complete the culminating project where the puzzle pieces are connected to demonstrate their understanding of a given ancient culture. This project allows for students of multiple intelligences to express their understanding of ancient civilizations. The students taking Global I this year will not be taking a Regents exam so this will afford us the time to do history correctly. Project based learning activities are the best way to engage student understanding of a given topic to broaden the depth of understanding. Your support of this mini-grant will help students achieve an understanding of a fascinating topic and will help them to think critically.
