Ancient, Dystopian, Contemporary-Community Matters a LOT

My students need multiple copies of six dystopian novels and 24 tri-fold boards to do an in-depth analysis and comparison of community--ancient civilizations to the futuristic ones in books to our own community.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Some of my students have not yet discovered books and/or academics that capture their imaginations. These could be the books and this the project that allows the magic to happen-where learning and reading and school and real life will come together with a vivid connection in a concrete way.

My students are seventh graders who are racially and culturally diverse and economically disadvantaged.

My classroom consists of students from all over the world. Our largest ethnic groups are Hispanic, Kurdish, Arabic, Somali, Vietnamese, African American and European American students. While these are our largest groups, students at my school speak upwards of 40 different languages at home. More than 93% of students receive free and reduced lunch. We are a Title I public school in the Southeastern region of the United States. We are a beautiful blend of cultures, languages, and potential.

My Project

Students will engage in a cross-curricular unit focused on society and community. They will use ancient civilizations, current events, and fictional societies to analyze our community and propose away to utilize a vacant/abandoned lot in our school’s zone to strengthen and improve our own community. Students will review the year's social studies curriculum that was focused on ancient civilizations between the years of 500 and 1500 to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of past societies. Simultaneously, they will get into literature circles and read current YA dystopian novels and analyze the strengths and weaknesses of futuristic, fictional societies. The final step will be taking what we have learned and analyzing our own society. To apply this knowledge, the students will be given the task of filling a vacant lot in our community with something that will enhance and empower our little corner of the real world. We are relying on donors to help us get the novels for our lit circles.

I think this project will make a difference in the lives of my students because they will see all of the content areas come together in one project.

They will use their social studies for historical analysis, reading to look into the future, math to graph out and chart their proposals, and science to make sure all forces work together and that nature is accounted for in their plans. I think the students will be so highly engaged and motivated that they will never forget this project.
