I teach Social Studies to 6th graders some of whom are in a CTT classroom and some are self contained .These students are from a high need community and the majority of them get free lunches. In my school the Special Education students are given many opportunities to excel although the are in the minority.
Presently we are studying the Early Humans. The students were amazed to learn that the Early Humans discovered fire and that they move from place to place to find food before they eventually settled and build communities. One assignment they had was to pretend that they were news casters giving the evening news about the latest inventions of the Early Humans and how these inventions made life much more comfortable for them. One of my students from the self contained classes approached me with the idea of doing the presentation in the form of real TV or Radio and asked if they could invite the Principal and the Assistant Principal as their special guest which they did and their invitation was accepted.I welcomed the idea and the students practiced but I was unable to record their practice to use to show the how they could improve their their final presentation they had to take my word for it , if I had the equipment to record audio the kids would have something they could both hear. My student were so excited about their work they would see me in the hall way and stop me to talk about it.the day of the presentation my administrators were very impressed with the kids work.
An ipod has the ability record and play back as well as strore information, this would be a valuable piece of technology, the will have the ability to edit based on what they see My kids can benefit from the use of this tool as they will learn how to use and care for their equipment.
I'm quite sure we all know the feeling of accomplishment, my students felt that when their administrators attended their presentation, imagine how much more accomplished they would feel if they were recorded and are being used as models to the other students remember that Special Education takes all aspects of learning and learning to use technology and seeing themselves at work will boost the moral of these kids.
