My Students
Think outside the box. That is what my students are trying to do. We have spent a year learning classical economic theory and preparing for the AP Microeconomics exam which is scheduled for May 15, 2015. The book Superfreakonomics will help my students to challenge their own thinking.
My students are pretty amazing.
All minorities living at or below the poverty level, they have big dreams, goals and ambitions. And, they have the drive to back it up. They realize that knowledge is their ticket to a better life. Having little money, my students are fascinated by it. This is partly why they have elected to take AP Microeconomics while in high school. They all plan to attend and graduate from four-year college or university. If they perform well enough on the AP exam in May, they will earn college credit for this course.
My Project
The book Superfreakonomics is immensely entertaining, informative and thought-provoking. It challenges conventional thinking in creative ways. It makes the reader think outside the box. As we are currently studying externalities, I'd like my students to read the global warming chapter and relate it to what we've learned in class. After the exam, I'd like to explore additional chapters with the students and encourage them to share their own insights. Them movies I've selected have excellent scenes that depict some of the topics that we're learning in class such as scarcity, opportunity cost, production possibilities frontier, oligopoly, monopoly, and collusion. As we take breaks from test preparation, these videos will serve to alleviate stress while providing some educational entertainment that we can relate to the curriculum. The colorful filler paper will help brighten up my students' binders as they take copious notes!
These kids inspire me every day.
Their parents or guardians don't have the discretionary income to buy them books for the home. Therefore, my students have little opportunity to do outside reading. I'd like to expose them to reading for interest and pleasure -- while showing them that books like Superfreakonomics can open their mind to new ideas and help them to learn how to challenge conventional wisdom in an intelligent and informed manner.
