My students need materials that provide a high level of support so they can understand informational texts.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach an amazing group of students in a Title I Urban school where 96% of the student body qualifies for free meals. My students face many challenges yet they come to school eager to learn. They know that our classroom is a safe place and that they are part of a community of scholars. At the end of the year I want them to be able to work cooperatively, communicate their ideas clearly and know how to solve problems.
I encourage students to value their strengths and to persist when they are challenged.
My Project
Students want to know what is happening in the world. Most of what they hear is from family, peers and from not always reputable internet sources. I've had students ask me about alien invasions, signals from outer space and the impending invasion of Los Angeles. They've also asked me about the conflict with North Korea, the proposed wall between Mexico and the United States and Global Warming.
Using the Scholastic materials, students will begin to develop the skills to differentiate between Fake News and Real News.
The Scholastic News Magazines will give students access to current events in a kid friendly way so they can evaluate written texts at a higher level. The Just Write materials will support their analysis of written text while helping them organize and communicate their thoughts and ideas.
