My Students

Horace Mann's theory on learning is most admired as he proclaimed that all children should be entitled to gain knowledge as the real value of learning was to improve oneself & their disposition in life. However, Inept resources for my students impedes their potential to read and write proficiently.

The students I serve are at risk for falling through the cracks in the area of literacy.

Their ability to pronounce the sounds of letters, recognize sights words, read phrases fluently, and comprehend/understand what they are reading has been limited due to learning disabilities, social ills and/or lack of materials at school/home to reinforce reading skills. I am fortunate to teach in an area where students are unsung heroes. The average student is able to enjoy "being a kid"; however, my students think mostly of survival as the people in their community struggle with social ills associated with poverty, high-crime, gang-infestation, illiteracy and homelessness. Nevertheless, my students beat the odds and attend school to find solace in a nurturing and academic-focused environment. In addition to regular school attendance, my students are high achievers and take pride in their learning. They are well aware that through education they can dream BIG and make dreams come true!

My Project

The 4 reading activities. "Phonics Activity Station, Word Work Activity Station, Common Core Language Arts Standards Learning Centers, and What Is Grammar? Book Set" are resources that will be used as hands-on materials to engage students in the reading process. The 4 teacher guides entitled. "Blast Off to Reading!, 50 Orton-Gillingham Based Lessons for Struggling Readers, Moving Forward with RTI, and What Really Matters for Struggling Readers" will be used to create an effective intervention program. The "Teach & Store Chart Stand" will be used with the magnetic letters to teach reading through the multi-sensory, phonetic approach. Professional literature such as, "Daily 5 and the The Reading Specialist" will be used as a reference for determining and correcting reading deficits in students. "Understanding Assessment of Reading Problems and Dr. Fry's Informal Assessment" are additional resources that will be used to diagnose and identify the reading problems of my students

Research has shown that the lack of exposure and resources are among the disparities of the achievement gap.

Donating to this project will walks students away from the poverty line towards the pipeline of success through high quality tools that will help improve their reading skills. Although educational philosophies are ever-changing, the vision of Horace Mann- to meet the needs of the students in our classrooms- is an ideology that is still upheld!
