My Students

The world is a vast, amazing place. Help me open it to my students through literature. A well stocked, organized class library would give my 4th graders a chance to discover places they can only dream of. It would also encourage them to explore new genres while respecting our shared materials, as well as helping to encourage lifelong learning.

Our school is a public school in a high poverty area, with a very diverse student population.

There are roughly 30 languages spoken in the homes of our students. Approximately 80% of our students are on free and reduced lunch. Many of our students come from families struggling to meet even basic needs. Yet our students eagerly come in everyday, ready for new discoveries and new challenges. Because of the positive attitudes towards learning that are being fostered here, our students fight hard to excel. We want to continue to encourage these learners every step of the way with as many experiences and opportunities as possible. Although these gifts you are sharing with us may seem small, they will bring great joy to our students, and will be treasured deeply.

My Project

Studies have shown that young readers are more likely to pick up a book if they can easily view the cover. A revolving book rack puts the books facing outward and at eye level. The addition of the book bins would allow our library to be sorted by genre and favorite series. This way I can easily direct students to what they need and are interested in with ease. All of these will also help to keep our books in better condition so they can be shared with many more classes to come. An organized library truly equals more readers.
