My Students
My students are an at-risk group of developing readers from a small, sub-rural high school in Michigan. They want to explore life's opportunities in an authentic way and with their new-found love of reading, they understand that this kind of exploration is possible through books like this one.
Author Wes Moore says that, "Having a vision for something bigger matters." Through his book, "The Other Wes Moore," he challenges readers to think about how their lives could go in different directions based on the decisions of today and everyday.
Namely, he challenges society's skewed "expectation-gap" for young adults.
My Project
According to the book description, "The Other Wes Moore" is the story about "two kids with the same name [who] lived in the same decaying city. One went on to be a Rhodes Scholar, decorated combat veteran, White House Fellow, and business leader. The other is serving a life sentence in prison."
As a low income, at-risk population, my students sometimes struggle to see beyond today and this moment. Therefore, they are challenged with difficult decisions. These choices not only shape their future but also the character of their hearts.
I believe that reading "The Other Wes Moore" will show my students how their choices can help them control their fates.
I want them to understand how, like this story, they can also "find their way in a hostile world."
