My students need access to books appropriate for their age and grade level. We need 5 MP3 players so low readers can participate in literature discussions.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember reading Island of the Blue Dolphin and sharing with your classmates the terror of the attack of the wild dogs? Or do you remember hoping Charlie would find the gold ticket in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? Low readers often miss out the experience of good literature.
I am lucky to be the librarian for a wonderful group of hard working dedicated students.
Over 70% of my students live in poverty, about the same amount are learning English as a second language. These children need access to good literature and yet their reading levels doesn't always match their interest levels. Most of these children come from families where parents don't have high school diplomas and yet they want much more for their children.
My Project
I want to be able to give the gift of good literature to all my students. Those who don't have the skill yet to read grade-level appropriate materials will be able to listen to wonderful literature downloaded onto these MP3 players. Learning to read is of utmost importance, but many students are missing out on essential literature while they struggle to catch up in their reading. These MP3 players will be checked out with books loaded on them like Island of the Blue Dolphin, The Diary of Anne Frank, Charlotte's Web, and many other books.
If you are at this website, you probably believe in the importance of education and great books.
While our goal for all students is that they become fluent readers, I want to give those struggling readers an oasis of great literature to listen to and enjoy.
