This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a High School math teacher in South Central Los Angeles. My school is a Title I school that is considered PHBAO (Predominantly Hispanic, Black, Asian, or other Non-Anglo). My students all qualify for free breakfast and lunch and comes from primarily low-income families. Many of the students do not have access the tools and technology needed for success in mathematics. With this lack of access, many students have to share calculators, Ipads, laptops, etc. which slows down their learning drastically.

In the face of adversity, my students remain enthusiastic about learning.

Although we've transition into hybrid learning, 80% of our students are choosing to remain at home. All students remain diligent, patient, and persistent as we all adapt to distant learning while adjusting to the pandemic. This is very motivating for me as a teacher to expand my teaching toolkit and provide the best distant learning possible for all my students as we hope to return to normal soon.

My Project

Many online Mathematics learning platforms have adapted due to the pandemic including Desmos.com. An iPad can help students access the dynamic online learning platform that is created by and for Math teachers. It has so many tools that can be used to enhance math content for students.

This tool can help students at home to have another way to access the materials that will help them learn best.

Desmos allow students to interact with the math content through an explorative approach. In addition, it will help me, as the teacher, to have access to thousands of teacher created lessons that will increase student learning.
