Have you ever tried to read in a place that's uncomfortable? It's not easy to do. There may be distractions. You may be in a hard seat, or you just can't find a comfortable position. Too often, the students in my reading class are asked to read in a place or position that is just uncomfortable!
My students are sixth graders.
I teach all of the sixth grade reading classes. I also have a homeroom for recess and a few other classes during the day. My sixth grade classroom is not the most comfortable place for reading. We have no carpeting and regular student chairs. For some students, this makes reading even more difficult! Students at this age (11-12) are already distracted by technology (computers, cell phones, video games) and are not very interested in reading. It is my goal to make reading more enjoyable by providing them with an inviting environment in which to read.
My Project
I am trying to create a reading corner for students who need a more relaxing and inviting place to focus on their reading. By providing a carpeted area on the hard, cold tile floor, and some soft pillows to place behind them, students will be able to find a more comfortable and appropriate place in the classroom to focus on their reading.
I believe that students will WANT to read more when they come to my classroom because they will have an inviting place to do so.
Reading is such a key component of ALL of our lives. I want them to love and enjoy reading as much as I do!
