My Project

Every day is Earth Day in my classroom. In addition to regular science classes, I teach Aquatic Studies in which students learn about the ocean and environmental issues, care for reef aquarium inhabitants and propagate coral. Middle school is the perfect time to get students excited about real-world STEM issues, environmental stewardship, and practical money management. We are a full-inclusion school, so I teach all students including those with special needs and lots of English Language Learners. The ocean is for everyone, and every student learns a lot about fascinating ocean creatures, asks a lot of questions, and uses a lot of new vocabulary while working together and engaging in lots of activities!

Aquarium study and aquaculture provide excellent applications of STEM concepts, financial literacy, teamwork, and responsibility.

The book Rethinking the Oceans: Toward a Blue Economy explained to me how from fishing, trade and mariculture, to tourism and recreation, ocean-related business cannot be ignored in conservation discussions. At the moment, the collection and export-import of marine fish and corals is a hotly debated topic. In our classroom, my students have propagated coral to share and trade with others, reducing the demand for wild collection. The food for reef creatures and the water additives to keep proper levels of alkalinity and calcium for proper conditions and growth will be used in our tanks daily. Students will use the tiny screwdrivers to change batteries in thermometers, calculators, pH meters, scales, and timers, as well as to calibrate salinity refractometers. We have to scrub 32-gallon saltwater mixing buckets periodically, so the turn-off spray nozzle will be handy and save water. Small lollipops are a nice treat after cleaning and the occasional mishap with saltwater. Lastly, the pearl oysters will cap our study of mollusks and introduce another commodity of the Blue Economy.
