I picked three books to start the school year by allowing my students to dive into their imagination, while reading about difficult choices from very different points of view. Help my students explore the lives of someone their age, who had to make decisions meant for an adult.
My students are amazing!
They are all neighborhood kids in a big city in Pennsylvania, below poverty level and awesome. They attend a public school right across the street from them. They are seventh and eighth graders. They have all been affected by domestic violence, drug use and death, but they are so incredibly strong, you would never know how they struggle everyday to come to school. They inspire me to be a better person and a better teacher. My students are my heart and soul.
My Project
The books I have chosen are three very different stories from three very different points of view. The Little Prince has been my favorite story since I was a child. I believe it will help my student imagine life from an adult's point of view, when they meet the prince and learn about his adventures. Coraline is a little girl who explores the vivid world around her. She is new to the area and finds amazing friends while meeting strange new people. This is perfect for my students who struggle to visualize what they are reading, because many of them have seen at least the trailer for the movie version. The Hunger Games is a book I couldn't put down this summer. It will be excellent for my advanced readers. It tells the story of a young girl who had to make impossible choices to survive.
I want to use all of these books to start real literature circles with my students. These books will give my students perspective on how other people make choices to survive.
My project is important because it will spark my students' love of reading.
These aren't boring old books that they've read a million times before. They are new to my students and interesting. This donation will give my students a chance to whole-heartedly love literature. Your donation might make a struggling student a reader for life.
