My Students
I work with some innovative, energetic, and dedicated 9th graders at my school. Like many teenagers in their age group, my students are curious and have a passion for learning. I am always taken back by the level of enthusiasm they bring to my class every day, even though for many of them, Math is not one of their favorite subjects.
Life is about making mistakes and learning from them.
I emphasize this statement because Math is all about making mistakes and how you can learn from them to do better next time. When I hear many of the stories my students tell about the mistakes they have made in their lives and how these mistakes made them want to give up and not come back, it makes me realize more and more how different their lives are from a normal teenager and the many obstacles they have to face before they even get to school. Still, they come to class ready to take on a new day, make mistakes, and learn from them.
My Project
As virtual learning becomes the new norm, I was struggling with keeping students engaged and focused in my math class last year. What made matters worse were all the technical difficulties I was having during our virtual sessions. Whether it was my computer freezing during class, or me not being able to display several tabs, or me having to wait a long time for my computer to boot up after randomly shutting down.
I always find ways to make learning fun and interesting for all my students, whether the learning is occurring in person or online.
However, it is difficult to do so when you are trying to address technical issues due to a slow computer. I like implementing games and interactive materials into my daily lessons. Platforms such as Kahoot, Padlet, youtube are very important in keeping students engaged and interested while at home. It is, however, difficult to implement these platforms regularly when it causes your computer to slow down tremendously or freeze.
As I start a new school year and get to familiarize myself with a new class, I can see how dedicated they are to their education and their willingness to learn. I want my students to have the same opportunity as any other students in suburban districts. I have had my computer crash twice already and both times students stayed on and waited until I returned in order to finish my instruction. I want to give them a smooth virtual leaning experience where they are having fun while learning about Algebra. I hope you can help me make this dream into a reality.
