Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A typical day in my classroom is busy, structured, and full of absolute joy. My students have moderate to severe intellectual disabilities. They are in the 4th, 5th, and 6th grades, and are from multiple cultural backgrounds.

My students' disabilities include Autism, Down's syndrome, intellectual disabilities and other chromosomal disabilities.

Our school, is a regular public school serving a diverse group of students from preschool through sixth grade.

Our school has two special education preschool programs, one primary (Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade) special education classroom/program, and my special education intermediate (4th, 5th, and 6th grade) classroom/program. Beyond intellectual disabilities, many of my students also have physical limitations, hearing limitations, vision impairments, seizure disorders, and other medical issues.

My Project

Special education and general education students will use the cameras and printer ink to capture and display images of our students of the month. The digital photography club will also take pictures of all school celebrations for our end of the year yearbook.

The photography club will integrate special education and general education students on a very special common goal, a school wide celebration of achievements.

The digital photography club will educate our school students about the immense value of academic hard work and the value of collaboration with a diverse population. The digital photography club will take pictures of hard working students and display the photos throughout the school

My project will also bring the students of the month project to a new level. Our school does include special education student recognition on a monthly basis. However, previously, this project was taken on by regular education teachers taking full responsibility for the project, meaning no students participated in the venture except for posing for pictures.

My vision is for special education students, in conjunction with regular education students, to take the leadership and responsibilities role for this most important activity. It is all in an effort to educate the future workforce about the immense contributions of an integrated workforce.
