it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
The nonfiction story, Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, is set during WWII, a time period which my eighth students will be studying concurrently in their History class. The story is often described as one of survival, resilience, and redemption – important and engaging themes. These themes lend themselves to writing thematic essays explaining how the themes are expressed and shown in the novel. Further, my students can explore through research historical events and people of the period in detail.
Another aspect of the novel which I believe my students will find engaging and connect with is that the central figure of the story, Louis Zamperini, was an impossible delinquent who grew up 30 miles away from our school.
My students will be listening to an audio recording of the novel in class and reading portions for homework with the novel in hand. In a recent article titled, “Paper Books Linked To Stronger Readers In An International Study,” researchers found that “all reading is good, but reading on paper is linked to vastly superior achievement outcomes.” Reading from the novel and connecting to it will greatly improve the chances of them reading independently in the future.
