This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
About My Students
Project based learning is our way of work in my Intensive Reading classes. Activities are planned so that students can develop intellectually and emotionally. My classes promote innovative ideas, collaboration, engaging learning experiences, student leadership and technology integration.
Michael, Jonathan and Kelly came up with this idea that they felt would improve the learning experience for all the students that I teach. We have computers, but no printers connected to them for students to print out their projects. They also thought that we needed an Innovation Center, where various materials would be housed for all students to utilize to create and design foldables, concepts maps and organizers that demonstrate their understanding of key concepts and ideas.
I thought their suggestion was a great idea and would really make a positive impact for all of my students. Adding a printer and an Innovation Station would empower students to engage in learning tasks that are purposeful to them and meet their educational needs.
The materials that I have requested on behalf of my students will allow me to accomplish my goal of re-imagining teaching and learning by incorporating new models of instruction. Technology will be infused to transform instruction and students will have access to a printer to print their projects and share them with stakeholders.
With the newly developed Innovation Station, students will have the resources needed to take charge of their learning and demonstrate their understanding of key concepts in countless ways. I already have the perfect location in the classroom for these resources. With these supplies and materials the curriculum will be presented in context that are meaningful to them. The projects and authentic learning tasks that they create will facilitate deeper learning and provide a more engaging learning experience.
In Their Own Words
The students who initiated this project want to bring resources not only to their class, but to all of the classes that I teach. They envision a classroom that is equipped with the materials and tools for them to express their learning in new innovative new ways. When presented with an assignment or task, they want to know that there is a place in the classroom all my students can go with the tools needed for successfully confronting complex problems.
This project will show our peers that a small group of people can do GREAT THINGS! Through our actions, we are setting positive examples for others that will bring much needed resources to students we don't even know. The completion of this project will show our peers that when you see a problem around you, it can be overcome by working as a team, creating a SMART Goal, working hard and never stop believing in the power of a few collective minds.
Many Intensive Reading students are frustrated and unmotivated when it comes to assignments. Some of us can not fully comprehend the complex concepts and vocabulary presented in grade level text or may lack the strategies needed for a successful reading experience. Our teacher always tries to present activities in engaging ways. Many of her assignments allow us to complete learning menus, create foldables or concept maps and utilize graphic organizers to explain our thinking. This project would provide the tools and resources needed to challenge students and empower them to design and create products on what they envision, rather the typical boring worksheets.
